Knowledge Cell 1st-ish Place Tournament Report

Round 1 L Vs Tommy Scheibel Combative Goku

I entered turn 1 and was able to do some damage to Tommy and I end combat with 4 anger on level 1, a 5 life card lead, and that's it. Tommy enters and I draw 2 freestyle cards and Nappa ally. Sweeping blast shuts my hand off and fierce attack and a bunch of other attacks follow. I lose 40 cards down and completely unable to retaliate.

Round 2 W Vs Derek Faraji Ruthless Mystic Gohan

Derek put up a really good fight in this match. He saw all 3 Red Relaxations early and before I could get Nappa ally into play. The game was close as I drew multiple dead cards a few times he had entered but I was able to weather the storm and hold him off long enough to level to Cell 3 and start banishing a lot of cards. Skillful Parry did a lot of work this game.

Round 3 W Vs Axel Bailey Manipultive Broly

Another close one. Axel kept throwing a bunch of 2 anger attacks and I never had the right blocks for any of them. Broly level 2 banished Namek Dragon Ball 2 early so I wasn’t stopping MPPV with that. The 2nd combat I drew 2 Unleashed and I made sure to use them before Broly level 3's constant effect could punish me for it. Eventually I was able to start pushing damage on Cell level 3 and using Namekian Max Wills to keep him on 4 so he couldn't MPPV. He made a fatal error in passing to me and a timely Namek Dragon Ball 7 put me in the place to win.

Round 4 W Vs Henry Johnson Energetic Raditz

Henry won the roll and drops Orange Encouragement. Then passes to me and searches another Orange Encouragement and Orange Possession Drill. I stayed on Cell level 1 for a long time to have that guaranteed lower anger 2. After I dropped him with Namek Dragon Ball 2 from Raditz Level 3 to 2 he had used all of his resources. Max Wills were able to control the anger before he ever made it to level 4.

Top 4 W Vs Derek Faraji Ruthless Gohan

The only game I won by DBV all day. The winning play was holding Unleashed for him to use his own to go to level 3. He played his and then I played mine and dropped him to level 1. I had been holding it for multiple combats. At this point the game swung in my favor and he struggled to find any real damage, then I DBV’d out of nowhere.

Finals W moral victory Vs the gym

Tommy didn’t find it necessary to play the finals match. Maybe because he absolutely blew me away the first time we played so he went to the gym instead. He probably would have Sweeping Blasted me into oblivion this game too. So we split the money and he forfeited to me.

Overall I had fun in the tournament. Tommy opened the gates of Hell round 1 but I was able to rebound and win a lot of games. Namekian Maximum Will was probably the card of the day as it was relevant in almost every game I played. Thank you Derek for hosting and I look forward to participating in more of your events.

Red Ruthless Ginyu Tournament Report

Greetings fellow DBZ addicts! This article is coming at you hot on the heels of my undefeated (spoilers) run in the most recent OCTGN League Tournament, hosted by the handsome, skilled and generous Kevin Dennis. I really appreciate the work he did to make this tournament happen, and I am grateful to the devs and other community organizers for everything they do to give us opportunities to hang out with one another and play this stupid, beautiful game.      Before my first match against Kelly Dennis, he asked “Why Ruthless?” In early testing with the Universal Clash expansion, I was most excited to play Red style because of the incredible new toys it received. Red Distracting Shot , Sundering Strike and Charged Beam are all wildly powerful cards, and I wanted to play all of them in a single deck. However, try as I might, I could not escape the fact that Relentless Mastery was relentlessly terrible. In every single game I played, I found myself wishing I was using Ruthl...

Deck Profile: Orange Energetic Videl

Dragon Ball Z is a show about muscular men punching other muscular men for the fate of the world. Ask anyone with a cursory knowledge of the show to describe DBZ and they'll likely imagine long scenes of monkey men (or occasionally slug men) screaming and flexing until they become buff enough to defeat the villain. But it wasn't always like this; the original Dragon Ball was more whimsical, full of adventure and fun even as it began to focus on high-octane martial arts action. This isn't to disparage DBZ, which used its more serious tone to great effect, but there was a magic to the original Dragon Ball that was lost somewhere along the many Super Saiyan transformations, the sense of wonder and awe fading as one incredible feat of strength after another desensitized the audience to the events happening on-screen.      Until Videl appeared.      Videl is unique among the DBZ cast, not because she's a woman and not because she's a human but because she'...

Desperately Seeking Support

As any card game ages, it develops a need for innovation. If the mechanics are left unchanged and new releases begin to retread explored ground, the game will grow stale and players will lose interest. Fan Z is no exception. Traits were the first new mechanic to be explored, and were exceptionally well-received by the playerbase. "Focused" was resurrected from Score Z. And in Premiere: Super , the Fan Z team introduced a wholly new mechanic not seen before in any iteration of DBZ: Desperation.     Desperation (henceforth abbreviated as " !!! ") doesn't really alter the way the game is played on a mechanical level. If you aren't aware, !!! effects only trigger when you have 0 cards in your hand. It provides a reward for sequencing, an incentive to play out your entire hand. But this in itself is sort of revolutionary. Dropping your entire hand is usually a faux pas in Fan Z, an overextension for which you can easily be punished when you are down a card in the...
