Tournament Winning Unity Supreme Kai Speedball: NJ Dragon Prix Report

Dragon Ball: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Shin, Universe 7's Supreme Kai

This was a small tournament but the competition was still top tier. Wayne, Kelly, Brian, and the Studioso’s are all players you have to respect sitting across from. So before I start I just want to acknowledge yes it was a smaller tournament but it was hard fought nonetheless. It was actually a last minute decision that I could even make it to the Prix because I found a chance flight to Philadelphia for $66! So if there’s a tournament you’re eyeing up attending don’t be afraid to scout some prices out because you might find a deal!

I played Unity Supreme Kai, a pet deck I’ve been toying with for a few months now. It’s a strong speedball deck, rivaling even Radiant Slug. Anyway, let the games begin!

Round 1 DBV L vs. Radiant Slug Wayne

This matchup is a grueling grind to the end game. Both of us slap our Dragon Balls down fast and have tons of little ways to capture our DBs back; both without attacking at times. This match was super even with Wayne using his DBV experience to his advantage and just outplaying me in general. Close game but he took it with a timely Namekian Resourceful Shot hitting the discard pile.

Round 2 DBV W vs. Ascension Krillin Victor Studioso

These are the types of games you play DBV for. The game only had one combat. I opened early with Blue Trick, Namek Dragon Balls 3, 5, and 1. Vic drops Red Relaxation, Namek Dragon Ball 6, and passes. I drop Namek Dragon Ball 4 and pass. He enters after this I think but I end combat with Supreme Kai’s Telepathy. I then draw the remaining Dragon Balls and use Blue Trick to capture the last Dragon Ball. The game lasted all of 5 minutes.

Round 3 Split with Kelly

We decided to Top Cut since Gastonia had set the precedent. This meant everybody who had at least a 1-X record would make it to Top 4 so we decided to split the last round leaving me 1-1-1 in Swiss. I wish more people had showed up so we could have had a more exciting Swiss but it is what it is.

Semi Finals Survival Victory W Radiant Slug Wayne REMATCH

Here we are again. Speedball vs. Speedball. This game I let Wayne have all of his tutors and focused on keeping Namek Dragon Ball 1 on my side while keeping one of his Earth Ball’s under my control. This worked to my advantage because late in the game Wayne’s hand was flooded with cards that said “go get a Dragon Ball” when most if not all of them were already in play making some of those cards useless. Wayne also had used a lot of his “Banish after use” tools early in the game which made things tough but I knew in the late game it would benefit me because I’m Supreme Kai; who thrives with 10-15 cards in his deck. Multiple turns Wayne had bounced Namek Dragon Ball 1 back to my deck or to my hand but I was almost always able to bounce Kami immediately to get it back out maybe even near 5 times throughout the game. Towards the end we both realized the Life Deck counts were getting low so I maintained an Earth Dragon Ball on my side and started pushing damage. Poking with Supreme Kai level 1 and Optic Blast. I hit him with a massive 8 Life Card Optic Blast and Sphere’d his Namekian Hybrid Defense to secure a survival victory.

Finals DBV W Vs. Blue Tag Team Vegeta Kelly

I entered this matchup with one major strategy: I’m going to eat shit combat 1 but I will remove Googeta from play. Kelly won the roll and passed to me. I dropped board like crazy and drew Blue Betrayal! I thought, “sweet I’m in this!” Then the next turns just went completely in my favor. Kelly struggled constantly to keep Googeta in play thanks to Blue Betrayal and Tug of War looping. Hell, I didn’t even eat shit combat one like I thought I would. The following turns I continue to drop Dragon Balls and board cards like crazy while Kelly struggles again to find an answer. I looped Time on him a few times. Eventually I entered with Confrontation and Time is a Warrior’s Tool and also enough board to loop Kami to search 3-4 Dragon Balls to win the game. I was also Supreme Kai level 2 and got to choose what Kelly was going to draw for his hand. So with his hand crippled critically Kelly was unable to respond to my Kami bounce strategy that was protected by Time and I closed the game out.

Thank you to Wayne, Kelly, and Ryan Lewis for picking the reigns up on this tournament because I was so busy with my move. And especially to Kelly for housing me and helping me get to and from the airport. I’m looking forward to the rest of OP season and the ToP now that I’m qualified. See you then!

Spoiler: Black Android Visage

Hey everyone! Here is a spoiler for the upcoming set: Black Android Visage.  This card works as a fun alternative to Black Command's Power that is intended to be used with the new Black Ominous Mastery. Even before you get to the trait this card reads pretty strong with a potential Level Up from the mastery at play. MP's like Goku Black, Raditz, and Frost will definitely enjoy having a few of these in their deck. Especially Frost, who can tutor this card on level 3 for a Level Up. Lastly, the Android Trait gives even higher value for a potential -2 to your opponent's hand and a Level Up. For a single action that could be game changing. Luckily there are not a ton of MPs with direct synergy but Cell and Android 16 could work. This card being villains only means it is searchable for A16's powers as well. But then you're playing A16 - a heavy burden to your ability of winning. Thanks for reading and I'll see you guys on OCTGN!

Top-Tier Privilege is a Myth: Op-Ed by Krillin

Hey everybody, it's your local law enforcement agent K-Dawg here. Lately I've been hearing a lot of criticism about this awesome Fan Z game. It seems like a lot of people think certain cards are unfair, or too "sacky." Well with all this time I've had on paid leave, I thought I'd write out some advice to help you guys have fun and win. My first tip?     Git gud, snowflakes.     Look, I get it. Combat can be scary. Your opponent is going to throw a lot of attacks and you might take a lot of damage. I hear it all the time: "I lost because I just didn't draw any blocks." Boo-hoo. I'm out here just like you guys, having to find ways to stay alive. I've gone whole games without drawing blocks. You know what I did? I manned up. I got gud. I played my own attacks as blocks and gained thirty anger before my opponent could respond.     See this is your first mistake.  Why play blocks at all? They're only good some of the time. Me, I realized t...

Spoiler: Red Barrier

Hey everyone! Here is a new spoiler for the upcoming set: Red Barrier. This is a pretty decent card for Red Relentless decks. It can be tutored by Red Surgical Strike and in tandem with Red Reverse you can have a fairly devastating lineup of mods. Anyways, enjoy and I hope you are looking forward to more spoilers as much as I am!  -Anthony
