Goz & Mez Second Place Ruthless Beerus

Hey! Anthony here to follow up on another Top Cut finish. I'm excited to jump into this one because I managed to Hakai most of my opponents with everybody's least favorite Set 16 Main Personality. Ruthless Beerus of all things is a deck I've been toying with for months and it has proven very strong in my testing. I came very close to playing it at South Kai but went with Resolute Ginyu instead. Derek's Snake Way Circuit Series seemed like a perfect place to put my dark horse to the test and so I went.

Round 1 vs. Kelly Dennis w/ Commanding Supreme Kai

Kelly and I had literally just wrapped up this same match up 15 minutes before the tournament and this game was wholly one sided in my favor just as the game before. I won the roll and enter turn 1, this deck's true strength being in E after powering up first turn and being the only deck in the game that can activate Ruthless Mastery immediately after winning the roll, and I proceeded to do tons of damage while preventing Kelly from getting anything done. My next turn I enter and drop like 40 cards of damage. A fun game for me!

Round 2 vs. Mark Simpson w/ Orange Aura Android 20

Mark won the roll and dropped Orange Absorption Drill turn 1. Ultimately it didn't matter because I was able to get to level 2 and tutor Red Observation and clear a board of 5-6 drills. From there I went to 3 and started throwing a ton of unpreventable damage for the game. And with plenty of time to start tackling my honey-do list on the side!

Round 3 vs. Erik Johnson w/ Namekian Knowledge Piccolo

Erik and I have been playing a lot recently. We played at South Kai and have played a bit on OCTGN the last few weeks. I'm familiar with his list and some of his more niche card choices like Namekian Palm Shots. He's a good player and you have to respect Knowledge Piccolo at all times. I won the roll and surprise! I entered turn 1. I left him combat 1 at zero stages and no anger. I didn't do a ton of damage though. Combat 2 I've got a level lead and Life Card lead and am able to maintain it. I won the game with MPPV still live on level 4 but it didn't matter because he was already dead.

Round 4 vs. Jon Simpson w/ Red Ruthless Broly

Congrats to Jon for doing so well with Ruthless Broly. I think the deck is primed to be really strong against a lot of the meta contenders. Against me, Jon won the roll and passed. We both had Red Collision on top when entering to gain an anger which I thought was funny. First combat he dropped double Broly's Face Crusher and had Red Blocking Hand. Ultimately, I got up 20 or so cards then Jon started to bring it back. He got to Broly 4 by seeing all 3 of his Red Blocking Hands; 1 more than I saw this game and if you know the Ruthless mirror you know who wins this game. Broly slammed me with multiple high damage attacks and I could just not do the remaining 4 cards of damage I needed to win. Good game Jon!

Top 4 vs. Kelly Dennis w/ Red Commanding Supreme Kai REMATCH

Here we go again. Am I going to 3-0 Kelly in the same day? Yes, yes I am. Although I think this is karmic retribution for him whining that I was sacking him turn 1 when he had a 10 card lead on my turn 1 enter too! I was down hard all game but through solid play all game I was able to turn it around. At one point he had 3 or 4 allies in play but I put my head down and let Red Shoulder Grab and Celestial Strike do the work. I won this game by -10 cards. A close top 4 game indeed.

Finals vs. Erik Johnson w/ Namekian Knowledge Piccolo REMATCH

I have to play Piccolo again but it was better than playing that Ruthless Broly twice. I lose the roll and honestly this kind of tilted me because of course I lose the roll. This game was much more even as we matched each other's leveling pace and I struggle to find any real big damage. Our Life Card counts remain even while I sneak in some Red Static Shot looping and he's hitting me with Lethal Chops over and over. He made an oddball play to grab Weighted Clothing on Piccolo 4. I drop Red Relaxtion next turn and pass because I don't have enough gas to kill him. He drops Namek Ball 1 and Ball 3 which is just greatly convenient for him. Anyway, I enter and capture Namek Ball 1 with Red Relaxation and then banish his entire discard pile with Beerus Level 4. I then proceed to punt the game by using Beerus 4 to destroy 4 off the top of his deck. Now he has cards to rejuvenate and gain anger with his blocks. It was just an extremely poor play on my part and I lost because of it. Erik played better than I did and earned it well. Good game and much respect!

Ruthless Beerus kicks ass. This deck is just so sneaky-good. You have Ruthless turn 1 sacky-ness, great anger hate in Celestial Strike, and a lot of unpreventable damage. The burst anger pushes you to Level 3 fast. Red Aerial Assault on Beerus 2 is probably my favorite discovery in the deck. I'm proud of the deck and what I was able to accomplish yesterday. Hopefully my performance brings a bit more respect and a community-wide second look at my favorite hairless cat!

Thanks Derek for running the Circuit Series and I look forward to bringing more off the wall deck ideas to these weekend OCTGN tournaments.

Red Ruthless Ginyu Tournament Report

Greetings fellow DBZ addicts! This article is coming at you hot on the heels of my undefeated (spoilers) run in the most recent OCTGN League Tournament, hosted by the handsome, skilled and generous Kevin Dennis. I really appreciate the work he did to make this tournament happen, and I am grateful to the devs and other community organizers for everything they do to give us opportunities to hang out with one another and play this stupid, beautiful game.      Before my first match against Kelly Dennis, he asked “Why Ruthless?” In early testing with the Universal Clash expansion, I was most excited to play Red style because of the incredible new toys it received. Red Distracting Shot , Sundering Strike and Charged Beam are all wildly powerful cards, and I wanted to play all of them in a single deck. However, try as I might, I could not escape the fact that Relentless Mastery was relentlessly terrible. In every single game I played, I found myself wishing I was using Ruthl...

Deck Profile: Orange Energetic Videl

Dragon Ball Z is a show about muscular men punching other muscular men for the fate of the world. Ask anyone with a cursory knowledge of the show to describe DBZ and they'll likely imagine long scenes of monkey men (or occasionally slug men) screaming and flexing until they become buff enough to defeat the villain. But it wasn't always like this; the original Dragon Ball was more whimsical, full of adventure and fun even as it began to focus on high-octane martial arts action. This isn't to disparage DBZ, which used its more serious tone to great effect, but there was a magic to the original Dragon Ball that was lost somewhere along the many Super Saiyan transformations, the sense of wonder and awe fading as one incredible feat of strength after another desensitized the audience to the events happening on-screen.      Until Videl appeared.      Videl is unique among the DBZ cast, not because she's a woman and not because she's a human but because she'...

Desperately Seeking Support

As any card game ages, it develops a need for innovation. If the mechanics are left unchanged and new releases begin to retread explored ground, the game will grow stale and players will lose interest. Fan Z is no exception. Traits were the first new mechanic to be explored, and were exceptionally well-received by the playerbase. "Focused" was resurrected from Score Z. And in Premiere: Super , the Fan Z team introduced a wholly new mechanic not seen before in any iteration of DBZ: Desperation.     Desperation (henceforth abbreviated as " !!! ") doesn't really alter the way the game is played on a mechanical level. If you aren't aware, !!! effects only trigger when you have 0 cards in your hand. It provides a reward for sequencing, an incentive to play out your entire hand. But this in itself is sort of revolutionary. Dropping your entire hand is usually a faux pas in Fan Z, an overextension for which you can easily be punished when you are down a card in the...
